Fire in automobile collisions is the major threat to humans. When the fuel spills from the tank there is high risk of fire since the chance of fuel coming in contact to ignition source is high. The basic design criterion is it should be simple and the number of components which gets damaged must be reduced. Minimizing tank explosions is the first and foremost aim in designing. The fuel systems should be kept away from ignition sources to reduce fire crashes. The motorist should be isolated from flame and toxic gases.

The tank material should be chosen such that it is resistant to cutting and tearing during crashing. The shape of the tank should be cylindrical or rectangular for more protection. Flexible hose covered by steel wire will be more resistant to tears and cuts during collision. So it is preferred for connections. It is safer to provide extra length for hose so that it moves with the other structures than being pulled.

Fuel tank safety plays an important role in automobile industry and care should be taken while designing and placing fuel tanks. If a person suffers due to defect in car manufacturing, he has rights to file a historical case against the wrong placement of gas tanks which has caused financial loss to him.
